Introduction

Shooniyaa Wa-Biitong supports individuals who demonstrate a keen interest in self employment as a means of creating self employment and promoting additional Aboriginal employment. Program support is available to eligible SE participants in the form of ongoing technical advice, guidance, training and information on available financial and non-financial resources for business start-up and development while on the program.

Objectives:

To enable individuals seeking self-employment with assistance to launch and operate a successful business leading to self-employment and the creation of additional Aboriginal employment.

Guidelines

  • Individuals must demonstrate the their business idea will create employment for themselves and have potential to create additional employment;
  • Individuals must demonstrate a personal investment towards the business start-up in the form of cash, inventory, equipment or borrowed funds;
  • Individuals must be able to commit and demonstrate that they are working on their business at least 35 hours a week;
  • Self Employment initiatives that contribute towards or support the overall economic development of GCT#3 are desirable.

Applications for Assistance

Individuals requesting participation on the Self Employment Program must attend an orientation session if one is scheduled. They must complete a self-assessment and EI verification forms, submit a signed application which includes, as a minimum, personal information, name, address, employment history, training/education attained, description of proposed business venture and planned financial and personal investment. Additional information may be requested to support application and/or to determine eligibility.

What are the eligibility requirements for participants

Participants must have the required training, education, and certification in order to be considered on the Program. In addition, participants:

  • Must be a Treaty #3 member who is unemployed and;
  • Meet eligibility requirements of the Self Employment Program and;
  • Is a resident in a First Nation, off-reserve urban or rural setting within Treaty #3 territory;
  • Is a member of a First Nation covered under the ASETS Agreement

Financial Assistance

  • Participants may be eligible to receive Income Support of $385 per week or receive a top-up to their Employment Insurance benefits equivalent to $385 per week. This is based on a 35 hour week.
  • Costs cover additional business management related training;
  • Participants who qualify for a loan from another financial institution may be eligible to receive assistance with equity.

Placement Duration

The length of time that a participant can be placed on the Self Employment Program is based on the type of business venture and the participant’s background up to a maximum of 48 weeks.
