ASTSIF

“Through Canada’s Economic Action Plan, the federal government is investing $75 million of new funding over two years to establish the Aboriginal Skills and Training Strategic Investment Fund (ASTSIF).

The fund will support short-term, focused initiatives designed to help Aboriginal people get the specific skills they require to benefit from economic opportunities, including those generated by the federal stimulus package.” excerpt from Human Resources and Skills Development Canada www.hrsdc.gc.ca

Shooniyaa Wa-Biitong submitted a proposal outlining the need to develop and enhance the skills of our servicing communities.

Through ASTSIF, Shooniyaa Wa-Biitong has secured funding until March 2011 to deliver this program in 10 (ten) participating communities in the Treaty No. 3 area.

Our Program

The Ozhiitaag “To Prepare” Program is a community based Pre-Employment Job Readiness Program designed to provide participants with life skills, academic and other skills essential to employment readiness.

Our goal for the duration of the program is to assist over 300 members of Treaty No. 3 to overcome multiple barriers to employment.

The project will also establish summer guiding circles youth camps, which will expose youth to a variety of training and work opportunities.

With these camps we will be increasing employability, defining a clear career path and thus increasing chances for long-term employment in adulthood.

The building of essential skills within these communities, and particularly among youth, will ensure a greater
resiliency to economic challenges as well as an increase to labour market participation as a whole.
